It treats sleep disorders such as insomnia. Zopiclone 7.5mg is a member of the pharmacological class known as non-benzodiazepine hypnotics and comes in pill form. Although its composition differs from other sedative-hypnotics, its effects are comparable. It shortens the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, lengthens the sleep cycle, and reduces the frequency of nighttime awakenings. This medication acts quickly. It is available as a tablet, but in certain nations, oral solutions are also an option for those who have difficulty swallowing.
Mechanism of action:
It binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA) receptors in the brain and enhances the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid which has a calming effect. Moreover, it relaxes the mind and the person feels a hypnotising effect.
Usages:
It is used for short-term treatment(7-14) of insomnia in adults. Zopiclone 7.5mg is used to treat people having sleep problems such as:
- Difficulty in falling asleep.
- Walking in the middle of the night.
- Waking too early.
- Sleeping problems due to emotional, physical and psychological disturbance.
Dosage:
For adults:
The recommended dose for adults is one tablet of 7.5mg of zopiclone just before bedtime. You can also use Zopiclone 10mg if required( according to the doctor’s recommendation).
- For elderly over age 65 years old
The starting dose is one zopiclone low-strength dose(3.75mg) or half a tablet just before bedtime. The increase or decrease of the dose depends on the doctor’s recommendation.
- For liver and kidney patients the recommended dose is zopiclone 3.75mg.
For children and Adolescents:
Zopiclone is prohibited for children and adolescents below the age of 18 years. It is not a safe drug for this age
Interactions:
Here are interactive possibilities:
- Medication for mental health(antipsychotics).
- Medicines for convulsions(anticonvulsants).
- Medicines for depression.
- Medicines used in surgery(anaesthetics).
- Medicine to calm and reduce anxiety or for sleep problems(hypnotics).
- Medicines for hay fever rashes and other allergies that make you sleepy(sedative antihistamine)such as chlorpheniramine and promethazine.
- Some medicines for moderate to severe pain(narcotic analgesics)such as codeine, methadone, morphine, oxycodone, pethidine and tramadol.
The following medicine can make zopiclone less effective:
- Rifampicin for infection.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Zopiclone is not recommended for pregnant ladies. They should take advice from a doctor before using it.
- There may be an increased risk for cleft lip and cleft palate(sometimes called harelip “) in newborn babies.
- There may be an increased risk for reduced foetal movements, and foetal heart rate. These effects are variable depending on whether it is taken during the second trimester or third trimester.
- If it is taken at the end of pregnancy or during labour, the baby may suffer from muscle weakness, a drop in body temperature, difficulty in breathing, suckling and respiratory problems.
- If this medicine is taken regularly in late pregnancy, your baby may develop physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms such as agitation and shaking.
- Do not use zopiclone if you are breastfed because a small amount of the drug can pass into milk and can affect the baby.
Storage:
- Store zopiclone below 77-86°F(25-30°C).
- Store in a cold dry place, away from moisture and sunlight.
Effects of overdose:
If you take too much zopiclone go to the doctor or the emergency department straight away. Its overdose can be dangerous.
The following effects may happen:
- Feeling drowsy, confused, sleeping and may fall into a coma.
- Decrease the tone of the muscles(hypotony).
- Due to a decrease in blood pressure, a person may feel dizziness, and lightheadedness and begin to faint.
- Begin to stumble or lose balance(ataxia).
- Shallow or difficult breathing.
So overdose should be avoided and medicines should be taken according to the prescription of the doctor otherwise you will have to face serious consequences.
Side effects of zopiclone:

Allergic reactions can occur. The signs of allergic reactions include:
- A rash.
- Swallowing and breathing problems.
- Swallowing of your lips, face, tongue and throat.
- Stop taking his medicine or go to the doctor and ask for alternative medicine.
Inform your doctor as soon as possible if you are suffering from the following side effects:
- Memory loss(amnesia) since starting this medicine if you have sleep of 7-8 hrs after this medication problem may be resolved.
- Seeing or hearing unreal things(hallucinations).
- Thinking things that are not real(delusions).
- Feeling low or depressed.

- Including common side effects of zopiclone.
- A mild better or metallic taste in your mouth.

- Feeling drowsy.
